Goodbye, English Olympics

Goodbye, English Olympics
By Joremah M. Jimenez

The Association of Private Schools in Tarlac Province (APSTaP) is always organizing a yearly contest to enhance the students’ communications skills in English. And this year’s English Olympics was once again held at the Dominican College of Tarlac (DCT) in Capas, Tarlac last January 8, 2011.

As always, the High School Department of ICF, Inc. would not miss this opportunity to showcase its students’ knowledge and talents in the said competition. Lead by their trainers and teachers in English, Mr. Francis Navarrette and Ms. JP Twinkle Maurera together with their co-trainers, Ms. Michelle Velasco, Ms. Melody Ulac, Ms. Mary Jane Manansala and Mrs. Dakila de Guzman with the support of our principal Mrs. Pilar C. Mayo, the contestants are filled with hope that once again we might bring honor to our dear Alma Mater.

It was a stiff competition as every school participants were aiming for the top. There were more or less 13 private schools that competed in every category. Our school and its participants only joined the individual competitions in six categories. They were: Christian Jayson Facun, I-Windows for Read-a-thon; Jessica Cadiente, I-Windows for Spelling Bee; Jenny Jimenez, II-Windows for the English Quiz Bee; Krissa Jamaica Reyes, III-Windows for the Essay Contest; Kathleen Andaya, III-Windows for the Declamation Contest (who won 2nd Place); and Joremah Jimenez, IV-Windows for the Extemporaneous Speaking Contest.

As one of the representatives, we went home with bright smiles and won more than the price as we gained new friends, more learning experiences, and additional knowledge from the English Olympics. Even if some of us didn’t make it on top we were still looking forward for next year’s competition because it was announced by the APSTaP officials and organizers that this will be the “final year” that the English Olympics will be observed. It was because for next year, the new and much improved APSTaP “Language Olympics” will be introduced. The English Language will not only be used as the medium for the competition but also our national language, Filipino. So, goodbye English Olympics and hello, Language Olympics!
